This explanation of learning targets is based on work being done by staff at West High School.
A learning target s a "daily-sized" chunk of learning written in student friendly language that states both what a student will know by the end of class and how they will show they've learned it.
It should answer these two questions:
1. What idea or topic is important for students to learn and understand?
2. How will they show they can do this?
Sentence frame: I can _____________ (by, to, through or while...)________________.
Quick checklist for learning target quality...
1. Does the learning target address a daily-sized chunk of learning?
2. Is it written in student friendly terms?
3. Does it state what knowledge, skill, concept that students will learn today? Are the skills varied across days by a combination of foundational ad higher order thinking skills?
4. Does it state how students will show that they can demonstrate the learning?
5. Does it build on a target from the previous lesson and connect with the target in future lessons?
6. Is it posted in a place were it is visible all hour and referenced at the start and during the lesson?
