The CORE SIX Essential Strategies for Achieving Excellence with the Common Core

Core Six Essential Strategies
These research -based strategies are put forth as methods students can use to achieve proficiency and beyond of the CCSS. They are taken from: The CORE SIX Essential Strategies for Achieving Excellence with the Common Core, an ASCD book written by Silver, Dewing and Perini.



1. Reading for Meaning helps students develop the skills that proficient readers use to make sense of rigorous texts.
  • evaluating and using evidence
  • finding main ideas, making inferences, analyzing characters and content
  • Close Reading, AVID strategies, marking the text, etc.
2. Compare and Contrast teaches students to conduct a thorough comparative analysis.
  • comparative analyses of of academic content
  • comparative analysis of two or more readings
  • integrating information from multiple sources
3. Inductive Learning helps students find patterns and structures built into content through an inductive process (analyzing specifics to form generalizations)
  • finding patterns and making logical inferences
  • supporting thinking with evidence
  • mastering academic vocabulary
4. Circle of Knowledge is a strategic framework for planning and conducting classroom discussions that engage all students  in deeper thinking and thoughtful communication.
  • Speaking, listening, and presenting
  • Integrating and evaluating information
  • collaborating with peers
5. Write to Learn helps teachers integrate writing into daily instruction and 
  • develop higher-order thinking through writing
  • writing in the Common Core text types: arguments, informative/explanatory texts, and narratives
  • writing for a wide range of tasks, audiences, and purposes
6. Vocabulary's CODE
  • Mastering academic vocabulary
