Classroom transitions

Looking at opportunities to reflect on transitions within a classroom...

1. Strategies for Transition in Middle School. This teacher uses 3 strategies in particular in class: a) 1-2-3 fingers up to represent different requests. One finger means they need help, Two fingers mean they need to use the restroom, and Three fingers mean they need to sharpen their pencil; b) uses a timer to let students know when they should be done with a particular task; and c) having students reflect on the length of time it takes them to complete their work. She also alludes to using clock partners.

2. Attention-getting signals. When we want students' attention several possibilities are out there for doing so...
  • Drum Beat. Using a musical instrument of any kind as a signal.
  • Hand raising. Raising your hand and having students do the same as they see you.
  • 30 signals grouped by age level. (I like the "Oh Mickey, you're so fine!!)
